Decide on Style

When you imagine the perfect pantry, what does it look like? Is it modern with sleek lines or farmhouse inspired with natural baskets? Is function or appearance more important? How much space do you have to work with? While space will not dictate style, it will certainly have an effect on the final result. When I imagined my perfect pantry, the only thing I knew for sure was I wanted to use baskets. I am also a fan of pantries that look retro – kind of like an old fashioned neighborhood market. So, I knew I wanted something along those lines.

Decide on Containers

This step took the longest for me. I knew I wanted some clear pantry containers, but I was not sure of what brand to buy. I was initially attracted to the OXO brand but the price seemed a bit high. I spent a lot of time researching other brands of pantry containers on Amazon and reading reviews. I almost bought another brand, but ultimately decided the OXO brand was worth the extra investment. I absolutely love them. They open and close easily, provide an airtight seal, and, best of all, they stack on top of each other and beside each other with no wasted space. That was the ultimate selling point for me. I wanted to make best use of my pantry space and the OXO Pop Containers definitely allowed me to do so. I ordered a large set of 20 various sized containers (with lids), and a bulk set of 3 containers perfect for holding 5 pound bags of sugar or flour (they also come with scoops). It was a good start.

Deciding on baskets was a bit more difficult. I knew I did not want to look into my pantry and see a variety of colored cans. Visually, I wanted less clutter. If you are fine with visible cans, then you might not need many baskets. I was not, so that meant quite a few baskets.

The first baskets I tried were a set from Honey Can Do from Amazon. The baskets are really pretty and I like the way they fit neatly against each other on the shelves. The set comes with three sizes of baskets, so they are also quite versatile. They have built-in handles (as do all three baskets I tried). Personally, I didn’t want to see the handles, so I turned mine sideways on the shelf. Ultimately, I decided the large size basket was not large enough for my needs (large packages of bottled water, cases of soda, etc.), so I ordered a different basket set and used the Honey Can Do baskets in my closet.

The second basket set I tried is from the DII Store on Amazon. This set of 5 Water Hyacinth baskets worked great on a number of factors. They looked good, they fit nicely on the shelf (the bottom is slightly smaller than the top), they were affordable, and the set of 5 baskets includes one huge basket, two medium baskets, and two smaller baskets. The medium and small baskets worked great to hold cans and the big basket was plenty big enough to hold anything that I needed it to hold in my pantry. I definitely liked this set a lot and filled my pantry with them.

Unfortunately, there was another set of baskets that I liked even more. These were from The Container Store and they just happened to be the perfect size for my narrow shelves, both in length and width. I also loved the way they snugly fit into each other with no gaps, maximizing my storage space. Ultimately, they ended up being my favorite baskets, although also the most expensive choice. These baskets are available in a variety of sizes, so measure carefully before ordering. I ordered 12 of the small baskets and 4 of the large baskets.

Order and Install Additional Shelving if Necessary

My pantry is not very large. It is basically a deep closet next to my kitchen. The builders installed one deep row of multiple shelves on the back wall. I knew I wanted to add more shelving and settled on some more narrow shelves that we installed on the remaining wall, resulting in a typical L shaped pantry.

Most pantries either have wood shelves or wire shelves. I prefer wood shelves but in the interest of saving money, I decided to match the shelves that were already installed by the builder and went with wire shelving. When adding wire shelving to a pantry, be sure to add the type that has narrow gaps between the wires, not the widely spaced shelving that is more suitable for closets.

Remove Everything From Your Pantry

Even if you are not adding shelves, it is a good idea to remove everything from your pantry. It is easier to organize your pantry if you can actually see everything together. I placed all of my cans, boxes, and bags of food on my kitchen counter. This also made it easier to thoroughly clean my pantry before organizing it. While you have everything on your counter, check for expiration dates. I was surprised to find that I had five cans of vegetables that had expired.

Determine Needs

When everything is scattered across your counter (or on your dining table), it is easier to determine what type of storage you most need. Do you have lots of different types of pastas and need containers for those? Do you primarily store canned goods in your pantry? Do you like to “see” your canned goods? If so, you might be better served buying handy clear plastic or metal racks that display your canned goods. Do you have pets? If so, you will also need containers for their food. Do you bake a lot? Do you use different types of flour (almond, all purpose, whole wheat, etc.), and need individual containers for each? Do you store your spices in your pantry? If so, you will also need spice jars. I love this set. It comes in a variety of sizes and includes handy labels. Grab a pen and paper and jot down the type of containers you need as you assess your needs.

Order Items

I ordered most of my pantry storage items from Amazon. With quick and free delivery, Amazon is difficult to beat. In addition, they make it easy to do returns (usually free) if your items don’t work out. For my pantry, I first ordered 4 sets of the Honey Can Do baskets from Amazon, then 4 sets of the DII Store baskets from Amazon, and ultimately from The Container Store, 12 small baskets and 4 large baskets. I ended up keeping the Honey Can Do and DII Store baskets and using them for storage in different areas of my house. The Container Store baskets ended up being my favorite baskets for my pantry.

When I ordered the OXO Pop Containers, I knew I would need quite a few but started with the 20 piece set (10 containers with lids) and the 6 Piece Bulk Canister Set (3 canisters with scoops that hold 5 pound flour or sugar bags). Eventually, I added more OXO sets (see below), but these were a good starting point.

I also knew I wanted labels on my containers so I ordered this fabulous of pantry labels on Amazon from Talented Kitchen.

Order More Groceries

While you are checking for expiration dates (and possibly discarding items), you might as well order any missing items so you will have a fully stocked pantry. If you are going to organize your pantry, you might as well do it right! If you store spices in your pantry, now is a good time to replenish spices as well.

Fill Containers and Order More If Needed

Now the fun part! Wash and dry all of your containers in hot soapy water and and dry to prevent spotting. No, that’s not the fun part. Filling them is the fun part! There is just something so satisfying about tearing open those assorted bags and boxes and placing their contents into shiny new containers. And, then, even better, adding labels! I have to admit, I had so much fun doing this. When it comes to pantry organization, for me, this is the best part. My messy and chaotic pantry was disappearing with every filled container. Tip – You can mark the back of your pantry containers so you have an idea of how much they hold. For example, I marked mine to show one pound of pasta. Marking it on the backside of the container ensures the mark will not be seen when on the pantry shelf. In hindsight, I advise placing a clear piece of tape on the back of the container and then writing with a permanent marker on the piece of tape instead of directly on the container as I did. That way you can just peel off the tape if you decide to use that container for something else.

Create a Visually Appealing Pantry

If such things are important to you, take some time arranging your filled containers on the pantry shelves until you are pleased with the result. Initially, I thought I would combine my OXO Pop containers and my baskets on the same shelves. After fussing with them for awhile, though, I realized my pantry looked better with the OXO containers on one side of the pantry and the baskets on the other. If you don’t care about how your pantry looks, and are just thinking about function, determine how to make best use of your pantry space and don’t worry about appearance. Do whatever works for you.

Move or Hide Extra Stuff if Possible

Chances are, if your pantry is anything like mine was, it is a bit of a catchall and you have extra items in there. If possible, move that extra stuff to a kitchen cabinet or storage closet so your pantry remains focused on food storage (and looks better!). In my case, I had a large food dehydrator and a KitchenAid Mixer that I moved to a closet. While this step isn’t necessary, it definitely helps you to create a more attractive pantry.

Add Pantry Decor

This step is optional, but how can you resist adding some cute pantry decor after you have just created the perfect pantry? I added three metal signs in my pantry. Two of them provide that retro feel that I wanted to include in my pantry. All are linked below!

In January of 2022, @lexnicoleta coined the phrase and hashtag on Tik Tok. She defined the aesthetic as “Nancy Meyers movies, Coastal Vibes, Recipes and Cooking, Ina Garten, and Cozy Interiors”. She went on to say you don’t have to even be a grandmother to love (and adopt) this aesthetic. Since then, women of all ages, and locales, are expressing their love for Coastal Grandmother Home Decor, Fashion, and the general lifestyle. Also, it seems, every one of them is sharing their version of Coastal Grandmother on social media. Who knew Grandmother’s style could be trending?

Coastal Grandmother fashion is all about dressing for comfort. It includes lots of whites, creams, and soft tans. Imagine Jane Fonda’s wardrobe as Grace in Netflix’s Grace and Frankie. Oversized white button-up shirts, creamy sweaters, linen pants, and a floppy hat to ward off the coastal sun. Remember how Diane Keaton dressed in the movie Somethings Gotta Give? Totally Coastal Grandmother.

Coastal Grandmother Home Decor embraces the same vibes. Neutrals, overstuffed couches, jute rugs, and flowing gauzy drapes are all included. Again, imagine the costal homes from Somethings Gotta Give and Grace and Frankie.

When I first read this definition of Coastal Grandmother I had two thoughts. First – Finally! An exact definition of my favorite style of coastal home decor (see my blog post on Five Types of Coastal Decor. Looks like I will have to add a sixth). Second – Wait! What? Does that mean I’m cool now? Well, maybe that’s a stretch, but I love that the home decor style I have embraced for so long is finally trending. LOL

No matter where you live, or how old you are, or whether you are a grandmother (or even a mother), it is easy to add a touch of Coastal Grandmother to your home. Coastal Grandmother is an easy and relaxed lifestyle. It stresses enjoying lingering moments and taking time to exhale. Creating places to linger and relax are key.

My bedroom is all about Coastal Grandmother home decor. Of course, I decorated it long before the phrase and hashtag was coined, but that is beside the point. When I was decorating my Florida home, I knew I wanted it to reflect the colors of the beach – soft tans of the sand, white foam of the sea, and the soft blues of the sky. I also knew I wanted my home to be a place where guests immediately feel comfortable. In this bedroom, that means cozy throw pillows and a soft pom pom throw blanket. The bright white coastal bed and nightstand compliment this pretty coastal table lamp.

I LOVE this simple vase set. It gives all the Coastal Grandmother Home Decor vibes. The vase set is textured ceramic and comes with a simple rope. If you don’t care for the rope, you can easily remove it. The faux tulips look like they were just picked from the garden. The piece of coral is the perfect punctuation.

Cant you just imagine this table setting in Grace and Frankie’s house? I adore this collection from Casa Fina combined with white linen napkins, and simple water hyacinth placemats and napkin rings.

This pretty white coastal accent cabinet in my dining room is one of my favorite areas to decorate. In the corner, a tall dracaena plant offsets the natural tones found in the wall decor, wicker tray, and wicker vases. To top it off, I added a gorgeous faux white orchid.

Lastly, my cozy white leather couches in my living room create a great place for guests (or me!) to nap. Comfortable throw pillows and throw blankets are always on hand in varying shades of neutral whites and creams. The simple beach inspired art print adds just a touch of soft blue to complete the Coastal Grandmother Home Decor vibe.

I love the Coastal Grandmother Home Decor style. Simple, cozy, and unpretentious, it is the perfect style for me. And maybe for you too! Celebrate the season and make it a Citrus Summer with Pioneer Woman Dinnerware from Walmart! As soon as I spotted the Cowgirl Lace and Adeline Dinnerware online at Walmart, I knew I had to have it! Both Pioneer Woman collections are available in different colors, and this combination of turquoise and teal is my favorite!

Cowgirl Lace Dinnerware

The pretty Cowgirl Lace 12 piece Dinnerware Set comes in five different colors. You have your choice of white, blue, plum, red, and (my favorite) turquoise. Each set consists of 4 dinner plates, 4 salad plates, and 4 bowls. I love the pretty embossed bead pattern and scalloped edge design. It reminds me of the bottom of frilly skirt that you might wear to a country dance. I imagine it with cowboy boots. Maybe I’ve watched too many Pioneer Woman episodes? No, never! The set is made of durable stoneware and, of course, is dishwasher and microwave safe. Don’t my dinner plates look lovely with that fresh ear of sweet corn? Yum! And I love the contrast of colors of the watermelon slices and the salad plates! The perfect summer pairing!

Round Braided Table Placemats

These pretty round placemats look great with my dishes and are available in a variety of colors so they are sure to look great with your dinnerware too. The placemats really compliment my table setting and are available in 9 colors. I think I will order a couple more sets so I can change colors with the seasons (or my mood!). Very affordable and a nice quality!

Pioneer Woman Timeless Beauty 10 inch Cake Stand with Glass

This pretty cake stand is perfect for displaying and protecting one of my favorite citrus summer treats – lemon cake! I love using a cake stand as a table centerpiece so everyone can anticipate the sweet treat that is sure to be the highlight of the summer meal. This cake stand has a vintage feel and reminds me of the one my grandmother always used when I was a child. Whether it is a simple meal at home, or a dinner party with guests, this cake stand is a perfect choice for tempting treats.

Turquoise Adeline Pitcher and Tumblers

This beautiful turquoise pitcher was the first piece I saw in the Adeline collection. As soon as I spotted it, I hoped there were matching pieces. And, indeed, there are! All of these vintage design pieces are made of embossed pressed glass and are dishwasher safe. In addition to turquoise, the Pioneer Woman Adeline Collection is also available clear and in a pretty plum color. Mine is full of the perfect summer drink – lemonade! I also bought the matching 16 ounce Adeline tumbler set. Like the pitcher, I love the detail on these tumblers.

This set of four 13 ounce bowls is perfect for summer treats like fresh strawberries or cold ice cream. They are also great for serving individual salads or sides. They are the perfect size!

Adeline Butter Dish and Salt and Pepper Shakers

This pretty butter dish makes its own statement. The butter dish and salt and pepper shakers come as a set. If I could only buy one piece of the Adeline collection, I would buy this set. The butter dish is, obviously, beautiful and looks great on my table. But the salt and pepper shakers might just be perfect! You would have to hold them in your hand to understand what I mean. The weight is perfect, and when you hold them, they feel substantial. Also, the holes on the top are generous in both the salt and the pepper shaker. Don’t you hate pepper shakers that barely allow any pepper to shake out? This set immediately became my favorite and is now always on my table at meal time.

Adeline Cookie Jar

Last, but not least, is the pretty Adeline Cookie Jar that you can spot in the corner on top of my white dining sideboard. The beautiful jar holds a generous amount of cookies (mine is holding chocolate chip cookies from Walmart’s bakery!). The lid has a glass handle and a silicone gasket to keep your cookies fresh. Although, if your house is anything like mine, keeping chocolate chip cookies fresh is not the problem. KEEPING them at all is the problem! Somehow, they disappear fast! But, while they last, they will look great in this jar. And the cookie jar looks pretty on your counter, even when it is empty (or just holding a few lonely crumbs).

What is a Coffee Bar?

A coffee bar, quite simply, is the spot where you display all of the fixings and accessories to make a great cup of coffee. Coffee bar decor can be really simple or quite elaborate, but above all, it has to be cute. If you are not creating a cute space, you might as well leave all of your coffee accessories in the kitchen cabinets. Imagine a little coffee shop right in your own home. Think about how welcoming your favorite coffee shop is. Your coffee bar should also evoke that feeling. Shop all of the coffee bar decorations in this post here.

Best Coffee Bar Locations

Kitchen Counter A coffee bar can be as simple as a spot on your kitchen counter close to your coffeemaker.

Accent Cabinet Any accent cabinet can be used as a coffee bar. Ideally, an electrical outlet is located behind the accent cabinet for plugging in your coffeemaker (or coffeemakers!). I use the accent cabinet across from my pantry for my coffee bar. It does have electrical outlets behind it, but I keep my coffeemakers on my kitchen counter, close to the refrigerator.

Butler Pantry A butler pantry is a great place to put a coffee bar, especially if you have a refrigerator in your butler’s pantry. This is ideal if you use refrigerated milk or creamers.

Coffee Bar Components

Coffeemaker Again, this is optional. If your coffee bar is not in a convenient location (next to water and the refrigerator), feel free to keep the coffeemakers elsewhere.

Cups Obviously, you will need coffee cups for your coffee bar. I suggest including a variety of sizes if guests will also be using your coffee bar. Cups are really cute when displayed in a coffee mug tree.

Coffee Storage Whether it is coffee beans, pods, or k-cups, you need containers to hold your coffee products. Canisters, baskets, or bins are popular for containing coffee. Carousels are also great for displaying k-cups or pods because they take up little space and hold a lot of product.

Containers for Sugar, Cream, and Sweeteners Ideally, these three accessories will match each other. Ceramic, porcelain, or tin are common.

Coffee Related Wall Decor Wall decor might seem like something you add as an afterthought, but it can set the tone for your coffee bar. I added a sign that displays the different types of coffee you might order in a coffee shop and it became an important focal point for my coffee bar.

Coffee Bar Decor Tips

Style Deciding on what type of home decor style your coffee bar will reflect is your first step. Do you want your coffee bar to look like a french bistro, farmhouse kitchen, or a modern coffeeshop? Once you decide on style, then all of your choices will flow from that. I wanted my coffee bar to have a coastal farmhouse feel and I think I achieved that with my choices.

Color Theme Stick to one or two colors to create a cohesive feel.

Centerpiece The center of your coffee bar is your focal point. Use a tray (single or tiered) or a decorative basket.

Wall Decor Your wall decor should reflect your decor style. For example, a retro galvanized tin sign would fit in with farmhouse style but now modern.

Don’t Be in a Hurry

It is tempting to gather all your coffee bar decor at once. Instead, buy some foundation pieces and take your time to add pieces that you truly love. When you see the final result, you will love it!

When it comes to Christmas, I have a reputation of going a wee bit overboard. Our last home was large and I managed to fill almost every room with a Christmas tree. I used to decorate for weeks. My decorations included eight full-sized trees (one 12 ft tree), at least four or five small trees, and white lights and garland a plenty. For me, decorating for Christmas was always an act of love. I spent all those hours decorating in the hope of creating memorable Christmases that my kids would never forget. I wanted the season to be magical, and it was.

When we moved to Florida, we downsized from a 5000+ square foot home to a 2100 square foot home. Our storage space reduced drastically and I was ready for a more relaxed lifestyle. I vowed my long days of Christmas decorating were over. I was handing over the decorating baton to my children. I’d go to their house for Christmas. I donated most of my Christmas decorations and during our first Christmas in Florida, all I did was wrap white lights around one palm tree. It was enough. I was over it.

Then, I started my Coastal Cheryl account on Instagram. Before I knew it, King of Christmas was offering to send me a gorgeous Christmas tree. Who was I to refuse? Well, that was just a little over one year ago. Today, I have three full-sized Christmas trees and four small ones. It seems that old habits die hard. And, in this case, that’s a good thing. I truly love decorating for Christmas. It’s part of who I am. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Now, I not only decorate my house, but I am also always looking for great deals for you. I love finding sales on Christmas decorations and beautiful Christmas trees. I start looking (and decorating!) in October. It may be 80 degrees in Sunny Florida, but inside my house It’s A Wonderful Life is playing on the television and I’m humming Christmas songs as I decorate. Here are some of my favorite Christmas decor finds of the year!
